13 Mi’kmaq communities are collectively pursuing a share of the Arctic surf clam fishery in Nova Scotia.

I wish to comment on the item “Surf clam decision stays,” published in the Telegram on July 21.

This article indicated new federal Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson of British Columbia will not reconsider the decision of his predecessor Dominic LeBlanc to hand over a full 25 per cent of the surf clam quota to a so called Aboriginal company on the mainland. There appears to be not even the slightest desire to have a brief re-evaluation of this matter so crucial to Newfoundland fish plant workers.

The appointment of this Western minister to the Fisheries portfolio despite the availability of at least half a dozen Liberal MPs shows how little these Liberal red worthies matter in Ottawa. They have done nothing to protect Newfoundland fisheries workers. At most they have helplessly wrung their hands and tried to shuffle away from this important issue.

I would like to ask, will 25 per cent of the value of Quebec’s Bombardier be handed over to Aboriginals in the name of reconciliation? will 25 per cent of Ontario’s car industry be handed over to Aboriginals in the name of reconciliation? Will 25 per cent of British Columbia’s forest industry be handed over to Aboriginals in the name of reconciliation?

They have done nothing to protect Newfoundland fisheries workers. At most they have helplessly wrung their hands and tried to shuffle away from this important issue.

Why is it Newfoundland is picked on by Ottawa to hand over 25 per cent of this vital surf clam industry to mainland Aboriginals who have done nothing to build up this industry? There also is stated in the article that a brother of a Nova Scotia Liberal MP heads up this Aboriginal company!

In my opinion, this whole situation reeks worse than a bag of clams gone bad. Newfoundland Liberal MPs, you were not sent to Ottawa to preside over the destruction of a Newfoundland fishery. Are you all doing Elvis’s “Do the Clam” dance to Justin Trudeau’s tune?

Do something for once to help the people who elected you. Stop clamming up and speak up against this latest outrage against Newfoundlanders by Ottawa.
